All beings that exist for long enough in this world gradually accumulate aura: a formless but undeniably real essence.

So vague and mysterious a concept it is, that even the kami, who depend on aura for sustenance, find it difficult to describe.

According to one kami, aura comes from a being’s history, reputation, and influence on the world, much like “experience points” in video games.

According to another kami, a being gains aura through its story, all the mythos surrounding it, essentially the record of all its accomplishments.

According to yet another kami, a being’s aura comes not from within, but from without, due to something unknown taking notice of it.

For kami and ayakashi, the strength and nature of their powers depend greatly on the aura they hold.
